Seekonk Public Library News 3.1 Monday January 5, 2004 A monthly newsletter about the Seekonk Public Library http://www.seekonkpl.org news@seekonkpl.org _________________________________________________________________ Greetings from the Director, Sharon St. Hilaire: 2004 will be a challenging year for the Town of Seekonk. We will all grapple with a fiscal budget shortfall. Maintaining services, as we know them will be impossible without an increase in our budget. It will be important for library users to support the library's funding request. Even with an increase, our budget represents just .02 on the tax dollar. I am sure everyone who uses the library can say that they are getting their money's worth. ________________________________________________________________ Biography of Anne Klegraefe - Senior Librarian - Reference As Senior Reference Librarian I am in charge of the Reference Department. I order Reference materials along with non-fiction titles for our circulating collection and take care of the periodicals. My main responsibility is to find answers to your questions. Teaching has also become an important part of my job. I am here to show you how to use our online catalog, electronic databases and many other reference tools we have. I also teach Internet and Word Processing classes to take the fear of computers away and show you how to find information independently. I liken my job to the saying, “Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime.” Professional Background ++++++++++++++++++++++ I received my Masters degree in Library Science from the University of Rhode Island. Prior to coming to Seekonk, I worked at the Fall River Public Library. I started in the Circulation Department and later went on to the Reference Department. I have served on various committees within the SAILS library network. Currently I am on the PubPac Committee that oversees the workings and policies concerning our public online catalog that you use in the library and at home. Personal Information +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I am married with three children ages 5 - 13. They are very active which keeps us very exhausted. What I Read ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I am open to various genres of reading materials, however, I tend to pick up mysteries and psychological thrillers more often than not. With 3 children I don't have as much time to read, as I would like. The perfect solution for me is to listen to audio books. They allow me to keep up with the latest bestsellers as I drive or do tasks around the house. ________________________________________________________________________ Friends of Seekonk Public Library meet in our Multipurpose Room, Please mark your calendar of these dates and plan to join us: Monday January 12, 2004 at 7:00pm Annual Meeting Monday March 8, 2004 at 7:00pm Monday May 10, 2004 at 7:00pm ________________________________________________________________________ Seekonk Library Book Discussion Group Seekonk Public Library Book Group will start its 2004 series on January 12th. Our fresh selection of new fiction is a great way to journey to faraway places and to meet fascinating characters. L’Affaire, the latest novel by Diane Johnson, author of Le Divorce, is set in a small ski resort in the French Alps. This witty comedy of manners is sure to capture your imagination. For those who love a heart-stopping thriller, Val McDermid’s The Distant Echo is a gripping murder mystery set in Scotland. McDermid, author of A Place of Execution, is a master of suspense and draws deeply compelling characters. Her new novel is sure to keep you up past your bedtime. Pompeii, the new historical novel by British author Robert Harris, begins just days before the cataclysmic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79.
