_____________________________________________________________________ Seekonk Public Library News 3.07 Thursday, July 1, 2004 A monthly newsletter about the Seekonk Public Library http://www.seekonkpl.org news@seekonkpl.org _____________________________________________________________________ Greetings from the Director, Sharon St. Hilaire : Everything we do with children is done to promote a pleasurable association with the library which allows us to foster literacy in creative ways. It is especially important to keep your children reading during the summer. Sign them up for summer reading. The following quotes say it far better than I . "Research shows that reading just six books during the summer may keep a struggling reader from regressing."http://www.scholastic.com/ schoolage/experts/learning/9_12_preventsummslide.htm "Countless studies demonstrate that children who read during the long summer months have stronger reading and comprehension skills when they return to school in the fall. These children have a larger vocabulary, and better overall school performance than children who don't read during the summer. It only makes sense, doesn't it? The more you read, the better you read. The better you read the more you learn." from http://www.tpl.lib.wa.us/v2/Kids/Bugs/parents.htm "Research shows that children can lose up to 25% of their educational gains if not educationally challenged and engaged during the summer. " from http://www.phila.gov/philareads/whatwedo.html "Experts agree that children who read during the summer gain reading skills, while those who do not often slide backward." http://www.rif.org/educators/articles/summerslide.mspx ************************************************************************ Janet McLintock - Customer Service Inventory Associate I work at the Circulation Desk in the Library. It is my job to check items in and out, register new patrons and to assist patrons who wish to request items that are not in our Library. I also process the inter-library loans that we receive from libraries throughout the state and country. I attended Rhode Island College for a year and left to enter the business world. I started to work at the Seekonk Public Library in 1993 as a substitute circulation clerk and eventually received permanent hours. I have been married to my husband, Bob, for 40 years. I have two grown sons and six wonderful grandchildren. I enjoy traveling, spending time with my grandchildren and naturally reading. My favorite authors are James Patterson and Janet Evanovich. ************************************************************************ Summer 2004 Reading Program is "Explore Other Worlds @ Your Library Children can sign up now and log the amount of time spent reading to chart their progress on the "ocean" bulletin board and hang their names from the big net on the ceiling. *********************************************************************** LIBRARY STATISTICS : May Items borrowed: 20,460 Children's programs 29, Attendance: 667 Reference Questions: 608 *********************************************************************** Have a GREAT Summer!
